History of Pre-33 Gold Coins
In 1794, the US Mint started issuing circulation gold coins. This included the US Eagle, US Half Eagle, and US Quarter Eagle. In 1849, the US Double Eagle was added.
From 1794 to 1833, these coins were released with 22-karat gold, also known as 91.67% pure gold. The remaining 8.33% consisted of copper, and or a copper and silver alloy. From 1834 to 1836, the gold content in these coins was reduced to 89.92%. In 1837, the gold content was upped to 90%.
Designs of Pre-33 Gold Coins
As mentioned above, Pre-33 Gold Coins range from 1794 to 1933. Numerous different designs have been used on these coins throughout the nearly 150 years.
- Saint Gaudens Double Eagle: Issued from 1907 to 1933 and designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This design of Lady Liberty walking towards the viewer is now seen on American Gold Eagles.
- Liberty Head: Issued from 1850 to 1907, these Liberty Double Eagles were designed by James B. Longacre and show Liberty in left-profile relief with a coronet crown. This design was also used on the Liberty Eagle from 1838 to 1907.
- Indian Head: Augustus Saint-Gaudens also created the design of the US Eagle issued from 1907 to 1933. This shows Lady Liberty in an Indian feather headdress. US Half Eagles and US Quarter Eagles also issued Indian head designs. These were created by Bela Lyon Pratt and show a Native American male in a headdress.
Common Grading Terms
Due to the age of Pre-33 Gold Coins, an array of grades is used for these coins.
- MS: Mint State. Identifies a coin graded between 60 and 70.
- AU: About Uncirculated. Identifies a coin graded between 50 and 59.
- XF: Extremely Fine. Identifies a coin graded between 40 and 49.
- Very Fine: Very Fine. Identifies a coin graded between 20 and 39.
