Product Description

The Liberty Gold Double Eagle was first minted by the United States Mint in 1850. As the fourth denomination in the series, the Double Eagle became the largest coin denomination ever struck for circulation by the United States Mint. Throughout its history, the Double Eagle had only two design versions, the first of which was crafted by James B. Longacre. Now, 1873-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles with a Closed 3 are available online at BGASC.

  • Reverse features the Great Seal of the United States.
  • Comes with an S mint mark from the San Francisco Mint.

These 1873-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are graded Very Fine 35, indicating they have light overall wear but retain visible details. The Closed 3 in the 1873 date mark on the obverse is characterized by tighter curls.

Obverse

On the obverse of the 1873-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coin, you will find a left-facing bust of Lady Liberty. She wears a coronet crown, and 13 stars surround her along the edge of the coin.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1873-S Pre-33 Gold Double Eagles showcases Longacres distinctive heraldic eagle design, known as the Great Seal of the United States. It features a front-facing eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, with the US national shield on its chest. Above the eagle, a ring of 13 stars and the national motto are engraved.

History

The Double Eagle, introduced in 1850, required a new design from James B. Longacre, who was the Chief Engraver of the US Mint. He was inspired by Christian Gobrechts designs on other Eagle coins, while adding his own touches to the Liberty figure and creating a unique reverse design. The US Mint struck these coins in 1873 at the Philadelphia Mint, Carson City Mint, and the San Francisco Mint. These San Francisco specimens were among more than 1.04 million coins issued by this branch mint.
