The Liberty Gold Double Eagle is a significant coin in American history, known as the first of two design series for the $20 Gold Eagle from the United States Mint. Introduced in 1850 and produced until 1907, it had a longer circulation period than its successor, the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. Designed by James B. Longacre, this coin remains an iconic American gold piece. Right now, 1877-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are available from BGASC.

  • Arrives inside a protective plastic slab!
  • 28th issue of Liberty Double Eagle Coins!
  • Declared mintage of 1,735,000 coins at San Francisco!
  • First date for Type III reverse specimens!
  • Limited number of certified coins available!

Each 1877-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin offered here is in Mint State 60 condition. Coins in this grade display an impaired mint luster with noticeable contact marks and hairline scratches. These coins may have been certified by either the PCGS or the NGC. We only guarantee the coin and grade, not the specific grading service or label design.

Obverse

On the obverse side of the 1877-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle, you will find a bust of Lady Liberty. This left-profile relief was designed by James B. Longacre in 1849, showing Liberty wearing a coronet crown and surrounded by stars, with the date at the bottom.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1877-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Coins features the Type III design. This includes a majestic bald eagle with the US national shield, along with arrows of war and an olive branch symbolizing peace. The eagle’s wings stretch wide, connected by sunrays, with a ring of 13 stars overhead.

History

The 1877 release of Liberty Gold Double Eagles is notable for the introduction of the Type III reverse design. The US Mint previously modified the original (Type I) reverse in 1866 to include the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST, resulting in the Type II design. The Type III debuted in 1877 with the denomination changed to read TWENTY DOLLARS instead of TWENTY D.
