Certified Silver Coins
Certified Silver Coins at BGASC
A Certified Silver Coin is a silver coin that was graded and encapsulated by a coin-grading professional. Grading a Silver Coin adds value as well as peace of mind as it ensures you know exactly what you’re buying and in what condition it’ll be in. Certification Process
The two most well-known coin-grading providers are the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) as well as the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). Regardless of which service you use, the process of getting a coin certified is similar. Coins are sent to the provider, where at least two numismatists will grade them under 5x magnification. Once a coin is given a grade, it is encapsulated in a protective plastic slab and returned to the owner.
Grading Terminology
When browsing our collection of Certified Silver Coins, you’ll notice a lot of unique terminology and designations are given for these coins. While the NGC and the PCGS each use the Sheldon Scale, they also each use a combination of terms to further categorize these coins.
Each grade is prefaced with a designation.
- MS – Mint State: Indicates a coin that is graded between 60 and 70. Struck in the same format as a circulation coin.
- PF/PR – Proof: Given to proof strike coins.
- SP – Specimen: Identifies a coin that is a hybrid strike between a Mint State coin and a proof.
- AU – About Uncirculated: Identifies a coin that is graded between 50 and 58.
- XF – Extremely Fine: Identifies a coin that is graded between 40 and 45.
- VF – Very Fine: Identifies a coin that is graded between 20 and 35.
Coins also receive further designations depending on the type of strike and when the coin-grading service receives them.
- DCAM/UCAM – Deep Cameo/ Ultra-Cameo: This term is only used for proof strikes. This term indicates that a coin has a strong, frosted finish with a mirrored background.
- FS/ER – First Strike/ Early Release: This term is given to coins that are received for grading within 30 days of issue by the mint.
- FDOI – First Day of Issue: This term is given to coins that are received for grading within 24 hours of issue by the mint.
