History

The original Liberty design by George T. Morgan, which appeared on the silver dollar, has remained one of the most iconic coin designs in American history. The left-facing portrait of Liberty is shown wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with a wreath made of cotton and wheat. Morgan selected Anna Willess Williams, a schoolteacher from Philadelphia, as the model for this classic image of American beauty.
