Rand Refinery
The Rand Refinery was established in 1920 to refine South African gold. Previously all gold from South Africa was refined in London. By 1922, the supply of gold to London, from South Africa, was virtually nonexistent. While the South African Mint is the only mint allowed to manufacture bullion and legal tender coinage, the Rand Refinery supplies all the precious metals used by the mint. South African Gold Krugerrand
The first modern bullion coin created for investment purposes is none other than the South African Gold Krugerrand. While these are struck by the South African Mint, the gold used by the mint is supplied to them by the Rand Refinery.
These gold coins debuted in 1967 and have been issued annually ever since. Furthermore, the design elements have remained unchanged since their introduction. The obverse shows a left-profile portrait of Paul Kruger. The reverse displays a Springbok antelope, which is the official symbol of the Republic of South Africa.
Initially just made in a 1 oz weight, these coins are now offered in fractional-ounce weights as well. These coins are made from 22-karat gold (91.67% gold.)
South African Silver Krugerrand
For the 50th year of the Gold Krugerrand, the South African Mint and the Rand Refinery created the South African Silver Krugerrand. These coins have been released annually since their debut and are available in 2 unique sizes (1 oz and 2 oz) with BU and proof versions being made available.
Design elements are the same as its gold counterpart. Furthermore, these coins are made with .999 pure silver.
Bars
The Rand Refinery also creates bullion bars. At BGASC, you’ll find that we offer a 1 oz Rand Refinery Gold Bar. This minted ingot is crafted from .9999 pure gold and showcases the identifying marks of the bar on the obverse. These bars will arrive with a sealed black assay card as well.
