- Paul Kruger, namesake of the coin, featured on the obverse.
- Official bullion product of South Africa.
When the South African Mint introduced the Gold Krugerrand in 1967, no other mint was producing a gold bullion coin for private ownership. The Krugerrand was developed to support the export of South Africas gold and encourage individual investment. These coins are offered in protective flips or plastic tubes of 15 coins. Please note that dates marks will vary.
Obverse
On the obverse, you’ll find a left-facing portrait of Paul Kruger, the former president of the South African Republic. This image was designed by Otto Schultz and has become a signature of the Krugerrand series.
Reverse
The reverse features a springbok antelope, a symbol of South Africa. Inscriptions on both sides are presented in English and Afrikaans. BGASC offers these coins from random production years, and your coins exact date will depend on what is available at the time of your order.
History
This coin dominated the market for more than a decade and accounted for most gold coin sales around the world. It wasn’t until 1979 that it faced real competition with the release of the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf. The coins decline in some markets wasnt due to its quality, but rather to international opposition to South Africas apartheid policy. During the late 1970s and 1980s, many countries restricted the import of Krugerrands, but large numbers still entered the U.S.
