  • Chinese Gold Pandas at BGASC

The Chinese Gold Panda is one of the most popular gold coins globally. Introduced by the Chinese Mint in 1982, it includes 1 oz/30 Gram and fractional-weight coins. Every year, a new design featuring the Giant Panda is added to the collection, making it appealing to both investors and collectors.

    History

In 1982, the Chinese Mint issued the first Gold Panda coins in weights of 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz, all containing .999 pure gold. Due to its initial success, a 1/20 oz Gold Panda was introduced in 1983. The Chinese Mint has consistently updated the design on the reverse side each year, except in 2002 when investor protests led to a change in 2003.

    Designs

The obverse displays the Temple of Heaven, while the reverse showcases a new scene of the Giant Panda every year. The bear, known for its black-and-white fur, is native to China’s central highlands.

    Variations

The Chinese Gold Panda’s history includes changes in weight, denomination, and measurement units. Denominations shifted in 2001, and in 2016, the Chinese Mint switched from Troy ounces to grams for weight measurement. The coins’ diameters were adjusted accordingly.

    Collectibles

Primarily a gold bullion investment, the Chinese Gold Panda briefly offered proof sets from 1986 to 1992, featuring a “P” mark. Occasionally, low-mintage coins above 1 oz are produced. Random allotments may include Gold Pandas from various years, either sealed or unsealed.

    Buying Options

When purchasing from BGASC, you may encounter random allotments offering specific weights with randomly chosen date marks. Sealed coins are in their original packaging, while unsealed ones come with a protective flip.
