  • Silver Eagles BU Bullion Single Coins & Unopened Mint Rolls at BGASC

The American Silver Eagle is the official silver bullion coin of the United States. The production of these coins can be traced back to July 9, 1985, when the Liberty Coin Act authorized its production. The Act called for the striking of a 1 oz silver coin with a purity of at least .999 silver, a rendition of Liberty on the obverse, and an eagle on the reverse. Less than 18 months later, the now iconic American Silver Eagle was born. Learn more about American Silver Eagles & Unopened Mint Rolls right here, at BGASC.

    BU American Silver Eagle

The first American Silver Eagle was struck at the San Francisco Mint, a branch of the US Mint, on October 29, 1986. Unlike burnished and proof coins in the series, BU coins do not bear a mint mark.

When looking into the design for these coins, the US Mint decided to reuse one of the most well-known designs in the history of American coinage. The Walking Liberty Half Dollar, which was issued from 1916 to 1947, included a design known as “Walking Liberty” on the obverse. Adolph A. Weinman created this artwork in 1916. This design has been used on BU American Silver Eagles since the inception of the coin program back in 1986.

While the obverse has remained consistent since 1986, there have been two unique reverse designs since the inception of the coin program.

    • 1986-first half of 2021: John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle was seen on the reverse of these coins from 1986 until the first half of 2021. The eagle is in front facing relief, looking to its left, with a shield on its chest. 13 five-pointed stars are above its head while identifying marks of the coin surround it. Coins issued in 2021, labeled as type 1, have this reverse design.
    • Second half of 2021-present: Emily Damstra’s flying eagle design replaced the Mercanti heraldic eagle. The eagle is seen flying in left-profile relief and landing on a branch. Identifying marks of the coin surround the image. Type 2 coins from 2021 will feature this design.

Individual BU American Silver Eagle Coins will arrive in protective plastic flips, preserving the condition of your silver during transit.

Unique Versions of the BU American Silver Eagle

The US Mint every year releases three variations of the American Silver Eagle, BU, burnished, and proof. However, some third-party dealers will take a BU American Silver Eagle and alter it. These unique versions include the following:

    • Colorized American Silver Eagle: There are many unique types of Colorized American Silver Eagles. Some, like the gilded versions, will just give color to Walking Liberty. Others will give color to the entire field.
    • Gilded American Silver Eagle: These coins include a thin layer of 24-karat gold applied to just Walking Liberty on the obverse. While the gold isn’t enough to drastically alter the weight or value of the coin, it does create a striking contrast and gives collectors another unique option.

Unopened Mint BU American Silver Eagle

For investors and collectors looking to buy in bulk, the US Mint also creates rolls of BU American Silver Eagles. These sealed tubes contain 20 BU American Silver Eagles, from the same year. For example, the 2024 1 oz American Silver Eagle Tube will contain 20 2024 American Silver Eagles. This also means that each tube contains 20 Troy oz of .999 pure silver with each tube having a face value of $20 (USD).

For those seeking an even larger investment opportunity, the US Mint also offers Monster Boxes. These boxes contain 25 sealed tubes, with each tube containing 20 coins. Similar to the tubes mentioned above, these Monster Boxes will contain 500 BU American Silver Eagles all from the same year of issue.
