American Platinum Eagles at BGASC

The American Eagle Series is the flagship bullion coin program of the US Mint. In 1986, the US Mint released both a silver and gold option, each with unique designs. The popularity of these coin programs led to the American Platinum Eagle in 1997. While the American Gold Eagle and the American Silver Eagle used historic depictions of Liberty, the American Platinum Eagle used a unique depiction meant for this coin program. Learn more about these American Platinum Eagles, right here at BGASC.

History of the American Platinum Eagle

The American Platinum Eagle debuted in 1997 with both a BU and a proof strike. These coins were issued in four weights (1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz.) For both the BU and proof versions, these coins were issued in all four weights, every year through 2008. For the 2009 release, just a 1 oz coin was issued. Burnished coins were briefly made available as well in all four weights from 2006 to 2008. Every coin is made with a purity of .9995 pure platinum.

  • 1 oz: $100
  • 1/2 oz: $50
  • 1/4 oz: $25
  • 1/10 oz: $10

Design of the American Platinum Eagle

The BU American Platinum Eagle has featured the same design on the obverse and reverse since 1997. The obverse was created by John Mercanti and shows just the face of the Statue of Liberty. Liberty is inscribed at the top with identifying marks of the coin being present on the right. The reverse, designed by Thomas D. Rogers, showcases an eagle soaring over America, as the sun is seen rising from the bottom of the coin.

The Proof American Platinum Eagle originally also showed the same design as the BU version on the 1997 release. However, the reverse from 1998-2016 changed with every release. New reverse images were part of unique collections created by the US Mint, which included the following:

  • 1998-2002: Vistas of Liberty – bald eagle depicted in a different landscape of America.
  • 2006-2008: The Foundations of Democracy – The three branches of the US government.
  • 2009-2014: The Preamble to the Constitution – Reverse designs inspired by the Preamble.
  • 2015-2016: The Torches of Liberty – Liberty and Freedom designs

In 2017, the original 1997 reverse was used again to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the coin program.

Beginning in 2018, the reverse was changed to a new design by Patricia Lucas-Morris. It depicts a bald eagle flying in left-profile relief with an olive branch in its talons. This reverse has remained the same every year since 2018. Now, the obverse changes with every unique release. New obverse images are part of unique collections. This includes the following:

  • 2018-2020: The Preamble to the Declaration of Independence – Depictions of Lady Liberty and a single-word inscription from the Declaration of Independence.
  • 2021-2025: The First Amendment to the United States Constitution – Five unique designs for five freedoms of the First Amendment.

Packaging

BU American Platinum Eagles will arrive in individual protective plastic flips. Proof American Platinum Eagles will arrive in a presentation box from the US Mint with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Certified American Platinum Eagles are another option.  These will arrive in protective plastic slabs to preserve their graded condition.

At BGASC, we also have 4-Coin proof sets which include the four denominations for a single year of release. These will come in a display case from the US Mint.
