Certified 1877-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles
The Liberty Double Eagle is a distinguished design that appeared on the $20 denomination of US coins for an extended period. Although other denominations in the US Eagle Series were introduced in the 1790s, the Double Eagle only came into use after the California Gold Rush, with its introduction in 1850. By the 1870s, it was a prominent coin both in the US and abroad. Learn more about the 1877-S Double Eagles today!
Double Eagle Production in the 1870s
Before the Civil War of 1861, Liberty Gold Double Eagles were produced at three mints annually: Philadelphia, New Orleans, and San Francisco. During the years 1850-1861, Philadelphia was the main producer. The war led to the New Orleans Mint’s closure, and gold hoarding was prevalent in the Eastern US.
During and after the war, the San Francisco Mint became the primary mint for Liberty Gold Double Eagles. In 1877, production was focused in the American West.
In 1877, the San Francisco Mint struck 1,735,000 Double Eagles, with the Carson City Mint contributing 42,565 coins. This totaled nearly 1.8 million coins from Western mints, compared to 397,650 from Philadelphia. San Francisco’s production was over four times that of Philadelphia.
Liberty Type III Design
A key feature of the 1877 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle is the updated reverse design. The US Mint produced three reverse designs for this coin. The Type I reverse was used from 1849 to 1866, and Type II from 1866 to 1876.
The Type III reverse design, introduced in 1877, featured the Great Seal of the United States and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” in the stars above the eagle. The denomination was changed from “TWENTY D.” to “TWENTY DOLLARS.”
On the obverse, the $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle retained James B. Longacre’s Liberty bust, based on Christian Gobrecht’s 1836 design. Liberty is depicted in left-profile relief with a coronet marked “LIBERTY” and a ring of 13 stars, with the 1877 date at the bottom.
