Chinese Silver Pandas at BGASC
One of the most interesting and popular silver bullion coin programs on the market is the Chinese Silver Panda series. Released annually, this series has a lot of history dating back to the early 1980s. Learn more about these Chinese Silver Pandas, right here at BGASC.
Series Background
The Chinese Gold Panda debuted in 1982 and was followed by a silver release the following year. Silver coins were issued annually from 1983 to 1985 as proof strikes with a purity of .900 silver. Silver Pandas took a year break in 1986, came back in 1987, took another year break in 1988, and have been issued regularly since 1989. Beginning in 1987, the series upgraded to 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver.
Design
Similar to many Australian Silver Coins, the reverse image always contains the animal the series is named after, the panda, but the image is unique with every issue. Only the 2001 and 2002 issues featured the same design on the reverse. Identifying marks such as face value, metal content, and purity are also shown on the reverse.
The obverse, however, has remained consistent since 1983. The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, located in the Temple of Heaven, is shown. The year of issue is shown at the bottom while “The People’s Republic of China” is inscribed at the top, in Chinese.
Change to Grams
In 2016, the Chinese Mint moved away from Troy oz, in favor of grams. This move was made to bring the Silver Coins in line with the nation’s use of the metric system.
The standard 1 Troy oz Chinese Silver Panda was converted to a 30 Gram Silver Coin. Also available are 150 Gram Chinese Silver Pandas, as well as 1 kilogram Chinese Silver Pandas.
Further Information
The Chinese Mint will sporadically release unique variations of the Chinese Silver Panda. In 2024, a 30 Gram colorized coin was released, as well as a 30 Gram gilded coin which has a thin layer of 24-karat gold over the 2 pandas. Proof strikes are also issued by the Chinese Mint.
30 Gram coins have a face value of 10 Yuan. The 150 Gram coin has a face value of 150 Yuan, while the 1 kilogram option has a face value of 300 Yuan.
Individual 30 Gram coins are available in plastic capsules, larger orders are available in trays of 30, or Monster Boxes of 600.
