South African Silver Krugerrands at BGASC
The South African Gold Krugerrand was the first gold bullion coin available to investors. This gold coin was struck in 1967, however, it wasn’t until 2017, 50 years later, that a Silver Coin would join the series. Learn more about this new addition to an iconic series, right here at BGASC.
Background of the Series
The South African Gold Krugerrand was first minted in July of 1967 by the Rand Refinery and the South African Mint. This gold coin was the first gold bullion coin meant for investment purposes. By 1980, these coins accounted for 90% of the global coin market.
However, economic sanctions making it illegal to import, parlayed with the rise of other gold bullion coins, led to a slight downfall of the South African Gold Krugerrand. In 2017, for the 50th anniversary of the series, the South African Mint produced versions in gold, silver, and platinum with issue limits of 5,000, 2,017, and 1,000,000, respectively. 15,000 proof silver coins were also produced.
This in turn was the start of the South African Silver Krugerrand series as they started becoming an annual issue in the following year. These coins are now released in multiple sizes (1 oz, 2 oz) and multiple versions (BU, proof.)
Design
Some annual BU Silver Coin collections feature unique images every year, such as the Chinese Silver Panda, or a lot of the Perth Mint series of Australian Silver Coins. Other series, such as the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf, or the British Silver Britannia, have used different designs on the obverse throughout the years.
The South African Krugerrand series, both gold and silver coins, have featured the same imagery on the obverse and reverse since the debut of each respective coin program.
- Obverse: A left-profile relief portrait of Paul Kruger. Otto Schultz created this design in 1892. Paul Kruger was a four-term president of the old South African Republic and is one of the country’s most well-known political and military figures. The country’s name is inscribed twice on this field, once in English, and once in Afrikaans.
- Reverse: A springbok antelope, the country’s national animal, is shown moving in right-profile relief. This image was designed by Coert Steynberg in 1947 and was previously used on the South African five shillings. Identifying marks of the coin surround the image.

These coins are available in individual flips. For larger orders, tubes of 25 or mint-sealed boxes of 500 are also available.
1 oz coins in the series have a face value of 1 Rand (R1) which is fully backed by the South African government. 2 oz coins have a face value of 2 Rand.
Every coin in the series has a purity of .999 pure silver.
