40% Silver Coins at BGASC

From 1836 to 1964, the US Mint issued silver coins made up of 90% silver. Due to the rising prices of silver, the US Mint transitioned to a new cupro-nickel alloy in their silver coins. However, two coins were still issued with actual silver content. These coins rather than 90% silver, had 40% silver content. Learn more about these 40% silver coins right here at BGASC.

Silver Kennedy Half Dollar Coins

The Kennedy Half Dollar was introduced in 1964 and was the final 90% silver coin to be struck. From 1965 to 1970, these coins were struck with 60% copper and 40% silver. It wasn’t until 1971 that silver was eliminated from the Kennedy Half Dollar.

These coins feature the left-profile relief portrait of John F. Kennedy on the obverse, along with a modified presidential seal on the reverse.

Eisenhower Silver Dollar Coins

The only other 40% silver coin issued by the US Mint was the Eisenhower Silver Dollar. Peace Silver Dollars were last struck in 1935. Silver Dollars were not produced again until 1971 with the Eisenhower design.

While circulation coins were issued with the standard cupro-nickel alloy, the US Mint did strike special collectible releases from 1971 to 1978 that had a silver content of 40%.

These coins feature the left-profile relief portrait of Dwight D. Eisenhower on the obverse, designed by Frank Gasparro. The reverse showcases a bald eagle design inspired by the Apollo 11 insignia, also created by Gasparro.
