The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) was established in 1908 and is now among the most popular mints in the world. Canadian Gold Maple Leafs
The most popular and well-known gold bullion product from the RCM is the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf. These coins were introduced in 1979 as the first major competition to the South African Gold Krugerrand. Notably, in November of 1982, the series was upgraded from .999 pure gold to .9999 pure gold, making this coin program the first to issue coins with a purity this high.
The series is named after the popular design seen on the reverse. The reverse of every coin in this series shows Walter Ott’s sugar maple leaf. The obverse of these coins features the effigy of the reigning British monarch. Over the years this has included a handful of designs.
- 1979-1989: Queen Elizabeth II at age 39.
- 1990-2003: Queen Elizabeth II at age 64.
- 2004-2023: Queen Elizabeth II at age 79.
- 2024-Present: King Charles III.
Coins are issued annually in several unique sizes such as the following:
- 1 Gram: $0.50 (CAD)
- 1/20 Troy oz: $1 (CAD)
- 1/10 Troy oz: $5 (CAD)
- 1/4 Troy oz: $10 (CAD)

In 1994, the RCM issued a 1/15 Troy oz coin for the 15th anniversary. This coin was released for one year only.
The RCM also releases special versions of these coins. Among the most popular are their privy coins which show a unique privy mark on the reverse to commemorate special anniversaries or events. The RCM also periodically releases special .99999 coins. Another popular release is their single-source coins which debuted in 2022 and released gold coins comprised 100% of gold from Canada specifically from a single source.
Other Canadian Gold Coins
- Call of the Wild Series: These coins are made with .99999 pure gold. and shows a portrait of popular North American animals in each issue. Designs have featured the Howling Wolf (2014), Growling Cougar (2015), Roaring Grizzly (2016), Crowned Elk (2017), Golden Eagle (2018), Moose (2019), and Hissing Bobcat (2020).
- Animal Portrait Series: The Animal Portrait Series debuted in 2017. These coins are reverse proof strikes made with 1/4 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold. The series has showcased the following designs – Bighorn Sheep (2017), Wolverine (2018), Mustang (2019), Woodland Caribou (2020), Great Horned Owl (2021), Moose (2022), and Lynx (2023).
Canadian Gold Bars
The RCM also creates an array of gold bullion bars. These bars range from 1 Troy oz to 1 kilogram. Gold bars from the RCM are created as either minted ingots or cast bars. No matter which kind of bar you purchase, these bars are made with at least a purity of .9999 pure gold.
Minted ingots arrive with an assay card while cast bars are wrapped and shipped individually. Identifying marks of the bar are present on the obverse of these bars. Minted ingots show a repeating pattern of the RCM logo while cast bars are intentionally left blank on the reverse.
