2024 Gold Libertads

The Mexican Gold Libertad was first introduced in 1981, arriving 60 years after the renowned 1921 Gold Centenario, which was minted to commemorate the centennial of Mexico’s independence. The design of the Gold Libertad has seen changes over the years, yet its iconic imagery remains a testament to the nation’s history, continuing to captivate investors and numismatists alike.

2024 Offerings

Each year, the Mexican Gold Libertad series is presented in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU), Proof, and Reverse Proof finishes. The collection comprises five weights: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz gold, all of which are available in BU and Proof. Since 2018, the Mexican Mint has also offered a Reverse Proof option in 1 oz and 1/2 oz gold. Proof coins are distinguished by their frosted design elements against mirrored fields, while Reverse Proof coins feature mirrored designs over frosted backgrounds.

About the Symbols

The obverse of Gold Libertad bullion coins features the Mexican coat of arms, while the reverse showcases the goddess of Victory. The Mexican design draws inspiration from ancient depictions of the Roman goddess Victoria.

Victoria’s importance grew alongside the expansion of the Roman Empire. As Rome’s military conquests increased, so did the goddess’s prominence in religious and civic life. Emperors often associated themselves with Victoria to legitimize their rule and emphasize their success in battle. This association was evident in coinage, where Victoria frequently appeared on the reverse of Roman coins, sometimes crowning the emperor.

After the Spanish conquest, the symbol persisted but underwent modifications. During the colonial period, the Spanish crown often incorporated elements of indigenous symbolism into colonial heraldry. The eagle, cactus, and snake motif was retained, but European heraldic elements were added, such as a crown above the eagle, representing Spanish rule.
