Tudor Beasts The Tudor Dragon Coins
Tudor Beasts Tudor Dragon Coins at BGASC
One of the more unique coin programs issued by the Royal Mint was their popular Queen’s Beasts Series. This 10-coin Series focused on heraldic beasts that were present at Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation. Furthermore, each of the 10 beasts represented a direct lineage to Her Majesty. The Royal Mint followed up this success with the Tudor Beasts Series which celebrates the lineage of the Tudor Dynasty. The first 5 designs in the series were the Seymour Panther, the Lion of England, the Yale of Beaufort, the Bull of Clarence, the Seymour Unicorn, and now introducing the Tudor Dragon. Design of the Tudor Dragon
Owen Tudor adopted the dragon into the English heraldry to highlight the Welsh ancestry in the House of Tudor. This ancestry can be traced back to the King of Gwynedd in the seventh century.
The design of the Tudor Dragon shows a dragon clutching a shield adorned with the Beaufort of Portcullis.
