Obverse
The obverse side of the Pre-33 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle features a front-facing relief of Liberty. Designed in 1907, it shows Liberty walking toward the viewer with the U.S. Capitol Building and sun rays in the background as she carries a torch and an olive branch. The field is encircled by either 46 stars (1907-1911) or 38 stars (1912-1933).
Reverse
On the reverse face of $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagles, you will find an image of the American bald eagle. This design shows the eagle gliding in flight over the rising sun. This field includes inscriptions of the nation of issue, face value, and, depending on date, the national motto.
History
The $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle was the second-and-final design used in the Double Eagle Series. This denomination was not introduced until after the California Gold Rush, in 1850, and lacked the other earlier designs found on the other smaller denominations.
