Originating during the Late Middle Ages, the skull and crossbones design was initially linked to death and often adorned tombstones across Europe. Its presence extended to insignias representing various social, cultural groups, and military regiments during those times. However, it wasn’t until the 18th century that the skull and crossbones design became predominantly associated with piracy, especially in the Caribbean. The British dubbed the skull-and-crossbones flag, featuring a human skull surmounted by two crossed bones, as the “Jolly Roger.” This name first surfaced in Charles Johnson’s A General History of the Pyrates, published in Britain in 1724.
