Design

The 5 Florida Goldback Gold Notes design highlights the colorful history of piracy along Floridas shores. It depicts a female pirate standing on a ships deck, reviewing her maps. Beneath her, the phrase “BRAVERY CONQUERS THE UNKNOWN” is printed, while in the background, a pirate ship with the word “AUDAX” sails in the distance. The word “audax,” which means daring and courageous in Latin, reflects the boldness of pirates during the Golden Age of Piracy.

History

Piracy was rampant off the Florida coast during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The “Golden Age of Piracy” (1690-1730) saw pirates such as Black Caesar and Jos Gaspar navigating the waters between Florida and the Caribbean, intercepting treasure-laden ships. Floridas coastline, with its many islands and hidden coves, provided pirates with ideal places to plan their raids and evade capture.
