Obverse

On the obverse of the 2025-W 1 oz Proof Gold Buffalo, theres a portrait of a Native American man in right-profile relief. Created by James Earle Fraser in 1913, the design draws from the facial features of three indigenous leaders. The image includes braids and feathers woven into the figures hair.

Reverse

The reverse of the 2025-W Proof American Gold Buffalo features an image of a bison standing on a raised section of land. This design, also created by Fraser in 1913, was based on a bison named Black Diamond, who lived at New Yorks Central Park Zoo around that time.

History

Frasers artwork debuted in 1913 when the US Mint replaced the Liberty Head Nickel with the Buffalo Nickel. The switch was approved during President William Howard Tafts administration, making Frasers designs part of a new era in US coinage.
