Obverse

The obverse of the 2024 Samoa Silver Morgan Union Dollar shows the Samoan coat of arms. The design features the national crest of Samoa with a Christian cross above a shield. The shield displays stylized ocean waves behind a palm tree in the upper field, and the Southern Cross constellation in the bottom field.

Reverse

The reverse of the 2024 1 oz Silver Morgan Union Dollar Coin features Lady Liberty. This design, created by George T. Morgan in 1876 for the proposed Union coin, shows Lady Liberty seated in right-profile relief, holding a caduceus in her right arm and a branch in her left hand. A sailing ship is visible in the harbor in the background.

History

The first attempt to introduce Half Union and Union denominations in the United States failed in 1854. By 1876, the conversation around these denominations resumed. However, it was short-lived and neither coin saw circulation. This time around though, the US Mint did see a design created by George T. Morgan. While it was never used, Morgan was later responsible for numerous other designs and pattern coins throughout his career. He created various medal designs, including the Assay Commission medals and many commemorative issues. Morgan also designed several pattern coins that were never put into circulation, showcasing his versatility and artistic vision.
