Product Description

In the 19th century, the United Kingdom made history by introducing postage stamps. Prior to this, postal rates were inconsistent and confusing. Stamps were created to standardize rates and simplify prepayment for postage. The Penny Black, known as the first-ever adhesive postage stamp, has a rich history. Now, the 2024 1 oz Proof Gibraltar Silver One Crown Penny Red Coins are available online from BGASC.

Highlights:

  • Coins arrive inside presentation boxes with a Certificate of Authenticity!
  • Replicates the Penny Red stamp!
  • Proof specimen!
  • Limited mintage of only 1,000 coins!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver.
  • Issued a value of One Crown.
  • King Charles III on the obverse.
  • Queen Victoria in the Penny Red stamp design on the reverse.

These 2024 1 oz Proof Gibraltar Silver One Crown Penny Red Coins come in presentation boxes and include a Certificate of Authenticity. The proof visuals feature frosted elements and mirrored backgrounds. The reverse’s red background echoes the Penny Red stamp.

Obverse

The obverse of the 2024 1 oz Proof Silver One Crown Penny Red Coins features King Charles III. Following British tradition, his left-profile relief is depicted. Queen Elizabeth II’s right-profile relief during her reign means King Charles III is shown in left-profile relief.

Reverse

On the reverse, you will see a replication of the 1841 Penny Red stamp design. This design closely follows the original Penny Black, showcasing Queen Victoria in left-profile relief with the inscriptions POSTAGE and ONE PENNY.

History

The postal reform in the UK during the late 1830s, led by Rowland Hill, introduced the concept of uniform penny postage rates and prepayment using adhesive stamps. The first step was the release of the Penny Black on May 1, 1840. The Penny Red was launched in February 1841, just nine months after the Penny Black. The Penny Red retained much of the Penny Black’s design, including the profile of Queen Victoria. The main difference was the change in color from black to red-brown.
