Obverse

Reverse

On the reverse, you will see a replication of the 1841 Penny Red stamp design. This design closely follows the original Penny Black, showcasing Queen Victoria in left-profile relief with the inscriptions POSTAGE and ONE PENNY.

History

The postal reform in the UK during the late 1830s, led by Rowland Hill, introduced the concept of uniform penny postage rates and prepayment using adhesive stamps. The first step was the release of the Penny Black on May 1, 1840. The Penny Red was launched in February 1841, just nine months after the Penny Black. The Penny Red retained much of the Penny Black’s design, including the profile of Queen Victoria. The main difference was the change in color from black to red-brown.
