Product Description

One of the most iconic characters from British folklore is St. George. The story of St. George defeating a dragon became so embedded in British culture that it first appeared on British coins in 1817 with the Gold Sovereign. The Royal Mint now introduces a new coin series celebrating the legendary tale of St. George and the Dragon. Right now, 2024 1 oz British Gold St. George and the Dragon Coins are available from BGASC.

Highlights:

  • Arrives in a plastic flip, acrylic tube of 10 coins, or a mint-sealed box of 100 coins!
  • 1st issue in a new series exploring the tale of St. George!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold in BU condition.
  • Bears a face value of 100 Pound sterling (GBP) backed by the government of Britain.
  • Obverse features King Charles III.
  • Reverse includes a depiction of St. George slaying a dragon.

Each 2024 1 oz British Gold St. George and the Dragon Coin offered here comes in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. The coins are available individually in plastic flips. Multiples are packaged in acrylic tubes of 10 coins or boxes of 100 coins. Each box has a total of 10 tubes of 10 coins each.

Obverse

The obverse design of the 2024 British Gold St. George and the Dragon Coin features a bust of His Majesty King Charles III. In this design by Martin Jennings from 2022, His Majesty is shown in left-profile relief, without a crown on his head.

Reverse

The reverse of the 2024 1 oz Gold St. George and the Dragon Coin depicts a modern image of the hero on horseback. In this design, St. George rides over a dragon and slays it with his spear, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.

History

The symbolism of St. George’s tale is one that was common in the Middle Ages. The dragon in this legend is often interpreted as a symbol of evil or paganism, while St. George represents the triumph of Christianity. His slaying of the dragon is seen as a metaphor for the victory of good over evil or the conversion of pagan lands to Christianity.
