The Proof Gold Libertad Series became an annual release in 2004, and with that change, the Mexican Mint reintroduced the 1 oz and 1/2 oz gold coins, while also adding three fractional-ounce coins to the lineup. The highest recorded mintage for the 1/4 oz Proof Gold Libertad was 3,920 coins in 2005, while the lowest mintage of just 250 coins occurred in both 2014 and 2020.

Obverse

The obverse of the 2024 Proof Mexican Gold Libertad displays the modern Mexican coat of arms. This emblem shows a golden eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus, gripping a serpent with its talons and beak. This design is based on an ancient Aztec symbol found in the 1524 Codex Mendoza.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 2024 1/4 oz Proof Gold Libertad is the image of Winged Victory. This design features the statue from the top of the Mexican Independence Victory Column. Winged Victory, a symbol of the Mexican Revolution, is shown in a slight left-profile relief, holding a laurel wreath in one hand and broken chains in the other.

History

The 1/4 oz Proof Mexican Gold Libertad was first issued in 2004, marking the start of annual releases for this coin. That year also saw the introduction of the 1/10 oz and 1/20 oz gold coins. Since then, the 1/4 oz Proof Gold Libertad has been released every year without interruption.
