History

St. Helena played a significant role in the history of the East India Company. The island served as a key location for resupplying and repairing the company’s ships during their long voyages to and from the East Indies. In addition, St. Helena was used as a place of exile for important political prisoners, including Napoleon Bonaparte, who was imprisoned on the island from 1815 until his death in 1821.
