History
Augustus Saint-Gaudens created the iconic obverse design of Liberty currently featured on American Gold Eagles. One of Saint-Gaudens’ most famous and significant works is the Shaw Memorial, a large bronze relief sculpture honoring the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, an all-black volunteer regiment during the American Civil War. The Shaw Memorial, located on Boston Common, has been widely regarded as one of the greatest pieces of American sculpture.
