Obverse

An indigenous tribal figure is featured on the obverse of 2023 American Gold Buffalo Coins. This design was created in 1913 by James Earle Fraser using real-world indigenous leaders of the early 19^th century as inspiration.

Reverse

An American bison is present in the reverse design of the 2023 1 oz Gold Buffalo Coin. Fraser also created this design in 1913 and used Black Diamond, a resident bison at the Central Park Zoo, as inspiration for his design of the buffalo in left-profile relief.
