Obverse
The obverse side of the 2018 Korean Silver Tiger coin features a striking image of the tiger – a symbol of courage, power, and good luck – letting out a powerful roar as it prowls through bamboo. The inscriptions, “1 oz”, “2018”, and “KOREAN TIGER” are centered toward the bottom of the design. A new Silver Tiger obverse design will be featured with each new year’s release.
Reverse
The centerpiece of the reverse side of the South Korean Silver Tiger round is a geographical representation of the Korean peninsula in Hangul, or Korean script. Instead of focusing on geopolitical boundaries, the stylized mapping of the peninsula focuses on the shared history of Korean people and the prominence of the tiger in Korean culture and mythology. To the left of the peninsula is the traditional red-and-blue Taeguk from South Korea’s national flag, and to the right is a micro-engraved security seal containing “999”, the purity of this silver round. This side’s inscriptions read, “REPUBLIC OF KOREA” and “FINE SILVER 999”.
