Obverse
On the obverse of the 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle, Liberty walks forward with her torch held high and the olive branch of peace in her left hand. Originally framed by 46 stars, it was updated to 48 stars in 1912 after the admission of New Mexico and Arizona. The 2017 edition modernizes this design further with additional stars for Alaska and Hawaii.
Reverse
The reverse features a family of nesting bald eagles, created by Miley Busiek in 1986 exclusively for the American Gold Eagle series.
History
The journey of this coin dates back to its inaugural release by the United States Mint, marking the revival of a design not seen since 1933. Crafted by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907, following a request from President Theodore Roosevelt, the Lady Liberty image captures a modern, distinctly American essence.
