Obverse

Not just the American Silver Eagle, but also the 100th anniversary of Adolph A. Weinmans Walking Liberty design was celebrated in 2016. Initially created in 1916 for use on the nations half-dollar coin, the Walking Liberty design returned in 1986 to be featured on the American Silver Eagle obverse after a 39-year absence. Inscriptions read LIBERTY, 2016, and IN GOD WE TRUST.

Reverse

The reverse of the 2016-W Proof American Silver Eagle Coin features the modern version of the heraldic eagle of the United States, designed by John Mercanti, who served as Chief Engraver at the United States Mint from 1986 until his retirement in 2010. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, W, 1 OZ. FINE SILVER, and ONE DOLLAR.

History

Introduced in 1986 as the official silver bullion coin of the United States, the American Silver Eagle program expanded in 2006 to include the regular production of a burnished coin. Proof strikes have also been released annually, along with the bullion coins, since 1986. The lone exception was in 2009, due to economic uncertainty.
