This Brilliant Uncirculated Fort Moultrie at Fort Sumter National Monument Five Ounce Silver Bullion Coin is the fifth of 2016 and the 35th overall in the America the Beautiful Coins Program. The reverse design of this silver bullion coin depicts Sergeant William Jasper returning the regimental flag to the ramparts while under attack from a British ship. Inscriptions are “FORT MOULTRIE,” “SOUTH CAROLINA,” “2016,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” The reverse was designed by AIP artist Richard Scott and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Joseph Menna.

Fort Moultrie, the first fort on Sullivan’s Island on the South Carolina coast, was still incomplete when Commodore Sir Peter Parker and nine warships attacked it on June 28, 1776. After a nine-hour battle, the ships were forced to retire. Charleston was saved from British occupation, and the fort was named in honor of its commander, Colonel William Moultrie.

Each coin depicts a United States National Park on the reverse and John Flanagan’s 1932 portrait of George Washington on the obverse. Inscriptions on the obverse are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and QUARTER DOLLAR. The edges of these 5 oz silver bullion coins are smooth and contain the incused inscription: .999 FINE SILVER 5.0 OUNCE. The coin will be sent to you in a protective Air-Tite Capsule.
