Obverse
On the obverse, Queen Elizabeth II is featured in a right-profile portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley. Although a new fifth-generation portrait of Her Majesty was introduced in 2015, the Perth Mint continues to use Rank-Broadleys 1998 design for the Lunar Series II coins to maintain consistency.
Reverse
The reverse of the 2016 1 oz Australian Gold Monkey features an exclusive design by Ing Ing Jong, created specifically for the gold coin. The artwork depicts a single monkey sitting in a peach tree, turning to glance at a peach hanging from a branch above.
History
The Perth Mint introduced the Lunar Series II in 2008, following the success of its original Lunar Series, which ran from 1996 to 2007. This second series continues the 12-year cycle of zodiac animals from the Chinese Lunar Calendar. In Chinese tradition, each zodiac sign is associated with certain personality traits shared by those born in its year. People born in the Year of the Monkey are said to be intelligent, curious, and lively.
