Obverse

On the obverse of the 2013-W US Mint First Spouse Edith Roosevelt Gold Coin, a right-profile portrait of the First Lady is depicted. She played a major role in updating the White House by overseeing renovations that removed outdated Victorian decor and created the West Wing, which provided a separate workspace for the president outside of the familys living quarters.

Reverse

The reverse of the 2013-W 1/2 oz First Spouse Edith Roosevelt Gold Coin features a column and compass, representing the First Ladys dedication to modernizing the White House. In addition to her renovation work, she also contributed to the establishment of the First Ladies Portrait Gallery, which preserves the history of those who have held the role.

History

Edith Roosevelt became First Lady when her husband, Theodore Roosevelt, assumed the presidency. The two had been childhood friends, and after reconnecting as adults, they married 18 months after beginning their relationship.
