History
Jane Pierce was First Lady from 1853 to 1857, but unlike many of her predecessors, she did not take an active role in White House social life. Her time as First Lady was overshadowed by a personal lossjust before her husbands inauguration, their only child, Benjamin Pierce, was killed in a train accident. Deeply mourning, Jane withdrew from public events for much of her husbands presidency.
