Obverse
In the obverse design of the 2007-W US Mint First Spouse Jefferson’s Liberty Gold Coin, you will find the Draped Bust depiction of Liberty. Designed by Robert Scot, this image was famously used on the US Half Cent in the 18th century and was also the inspiration for the Draped Bust Liberty on US Eagle Gold coins from the same era.
Reverse
For the reverse side of 2007-W 1/2 oz Jefferson’s Liberty Gold Coin, you will find the monument built to honor President Thomas Jefferson following his death. It is overlaid by an epitaph that Jefferson penned himself.
History
The First Spouse Gold Coin Program utilized Lady Liberty as a symbolic spouse during the tenure of unmarried Presidents. By the time of Thomas Jefferson’s presidency, he had been a widower for almost twenty years. The First Spouse coin issued in honor of his time in office adopted the portrayal of Lady Liberty from the coinage minted during his era, specifically the Draped Bust Half-Cent designed by Robert Scot, a celebrated engraver from the late 1700s to the early 1800s.
