History

The First Spouse Gold Coin Program was established with the aim of commemorating the personalities and contributions of the lifelong partners of the Oval Office’s history-making procession of inhabitants. However, the program also sought to include those Presidents who ascended to office without a spouse, such as Thomas Jefferson, who had been a widower for nineteen years when he assumed office in 1801. To feature such figures in the program, Lady Liberty was represented through an image inspired by a coin issue during their term, which in Jefferson’s case was the Draped Bust Half-Cent coin that featured elegant engravings by Robert Scot and was issued between 1800 and 1809. This design choice ensures that every President, with or without a spouse, is honored in this unique commemorative coin program.
