Each 2004 1/2 oz Australian Silver Lunar Monkey Coin is protected in a plastic capsule. Perth Mint issued 52,792 of these coins in 2004. This coin is the sixth release in the Lunar Series I silver collection. The gold Lunar Series I coins began in 1996, with the silver series starting three years later.

Obverse

The obverse of the 2004 Australian Silver Lunar Monkey Coin features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley. This design was introduced in 1998 and appeared on coins across the Commonwealth until at least 2015. For Perth Mint’s Lunar Series coins, it remained in use until 2019.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 2004 1/2 oz Silver Lunar Monkey Coin, you will see Sarah Andersons design for the Year of the Monkey. The coin depicts a monkey sitting on a tree branch, surrounded by foliage along the coin’s edges.

History

The Monkey year is represented by the Chinese character “Shen” (), which depicts a tree branching out in various directions, symbolizing the monkey’s agility and versatility. The lucky colors associated with the Monkey year are white, blue, and gold.
