Product Description
First issued in 1982, the Chinese Gold Panda Series has become a well-known choice in the precious metals market. It originally included 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz coins. In 1983, the 1/20 oz version was added. One of the unique aspects of this series is that each year features a different design of the Giant Panda on the reverse. BGASC now offers the 2000 1/2 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coin.
Highlights:
- Comes with a sealed plastic pouch!
- 19th date in the Gold Panda Series!
- Total mintage of only 20,811 coins!
- Contains 1/2 Troy oz of .999 pure gold.
- The face value of 50 Yuan is fully backed by Chinese government.
- On the obverse is the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests.
- The reverse displays a panda leaning against a rock.
Each 2000 1/2 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coin is sealed in a plastic pouch from the mint. Only 20,811 were struck, and this edition stands out as the last year the original face values were used. Starting in 2001, the series introduced new denominations for the coins.
Obverse
The obverse of the coin highlights the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests, a building located in Beijings Temple of Heaven complex. This structure was once a key site for imperial ceremonies where emperors would offer prayers for good harvests. The image includes the stairs leading up to its recognizable roofline.
Reverse
The reverse design shows a Giant Panda leaning back against a rock, with bamboo growing nearby. Even though pandas have traits associated with meat-eaters, their diet is nearly all plant-based. To make up for their digestive limitations, they eat large amounts of bamboo dailyoften 20 to 40 pounds.
History
Conservation programs for the Giant Panda have focused on preserving its habitat and ensuring pandas can travel between regions to access bamboo and find mates. Despite their biology being suited to meat, pandas have adapted to survive mainly on bamboo, showing how animals can evolve to fit into narrow ecological roles.
