Obverse

The obverse design of the 1998 1/2 oz Gold Panda Coin shows the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. This temple is located in Beijing and forms part of the larger Temple of Heaven site, an important structure from the Ming Dynasty. You can also see the stairs leading up to the halls main doors in the design.

Reverse

The reverse side of the coin features a Giant Panda resting on a rock and holding bamboo. Though pandas are technically meat-eaters, they mostly live on bamboo. Because bamboo doesnt offer much energy, pandas have to eat quite a lotup to 40 pounds per dayspending most of their time foraging and eating.

History

To better handle their bamboo diet, pandas have developed unique features, like a bone in their wrist that works like a thumb for grabbing bamboo stalks. They also have strong jaw muscles and flat molars, which help them break down the plants tough fibers. Still, they absorb only about 20% of bamboos nutrients.
