Obverse
Turn to the obverse, and you’ll encounter the full-length figure of Lady Liberty walking towards you, her hair flowing, and a torch in her outstretched right hand. In her left hand, she holds an olive branch, with the Capitol building depicted to the left of her right foot.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 1986 American Gold Eagle coin, witness a male eagle returning to the family nest with an olive branch. A female eagle guards eaglets in the nest, symbolizing the importance of family in America. This design, sculpted by Sherl J. Winter from Miley Busiek’s creation, includes thoughtful inscriptions.
History
In 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt envisioned a more artistically vibrant design for the nation’s coinage. Augustus Saint-Gaudens, answering the call, crafted the Lady Liberty designs, later repurposed for the American Gold Eagle coins. In 1986, the gold price began at $326.30 per ounce, spiked at $438.00 in September (just before the Gold Eagle release), and closed the year at $396.13 per ouncea 19% increase from 1985.
