Obverse
On the obverse of the 1981 Mexican Gold Libertad, the modern coat of arms of Mexico is depicted. This design shows a golden eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus, battling a serpent with its beak and talons, encircled by a wreath of oak and laurel leaves.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 1981 1/2 oz Gold Libertad features the iconic Winged Victory statue. Originally introduced in 1921 on the Gold Centenario coin, this design presents the front-facing image of Winged Victory, which is seen atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column in Mexico City.
History
The Gold Libertads series began in 1981, with the Mexican Mint introducing these coins to the market. The program didn’t see continuous annual releases until 1991, when it expanded to include five different weights. Since 2002, the Mexican Mint has been striking these coins every year in various sizes. All coins feature the modern Mexican coat of arms. The nation’s seal has undergone various changes over time. During the brief Second Mexican Empire (1864-1867) under Maximilian I, the coat of arms was significantly altered. It featured a crowned eagle with spread wings, surrounded by the collar of the Order of the Mexican Eagle, and supported by griffins.
