Product Description

The Indian Half Eagle was the final design used for the $5 Gold Half Eagle from the United States Mint. First struck in 1795, the $5 Half Eagle remained in production until 1929 and circulated until 1933. In 1908, the Indian Gold Half Eagle was introduced as the fifth and final design in this historic series. Right now, 1912 Pre-33 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coins are available at BGASC.

  • 5th release of Indian Gold Half Eagles!
  • Total mintage of more than 1.1 million coins in 1912!
  • Contains .242 Troy oz of actual gold content.
  • Assigned a face value of $5 (USD) by the federal government.
  • Extremely Fine condition.
  • The obverse shows an indigenous figure.
  • The reverse depicts the American bald eagle.

Each 1912 Pre-33 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coin comes in Extremely Fine condition. Coins in this condition retain some of their original mint brilliance, though light wear may be visible on the higher points of the design. The Indian Half Eagles are notable for their incuse designs, a unique style where the imagery is pressed into the coins surface instead of raised.

Obverse

On the obverse of the 1912 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle, a portrait of an indigenous figure is shown. This was the first depiction of a Native American person on US coinage. The design shows the individual in left-profile relief wearing a feathered headdress.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 1912 Pre-33 Indian Half Eagle Coins includes the image of an American bald eagle. The eagle is shown perched on a sheaf of arrows, which is entwined with an olive branch. This design represents both the nation’s readiness for war and its desire for peace.

History

In 1912, more than 1.1 million $5 Indian Half Eagles were produced by the US Mint. These coins were minted in Philadelphia and San Francisco, with 790,000 coins struck in Philadelphia and 392,000 in San Francisco. This series was minted annually from 1908 to 1916 before being paused during World War I. Production resumed briefly in 1929, though the coins circulated until 1933.
