This means the coins show only minor signs of wear, typically limited to the highest points of the design. AU-graded coins are typically graded between AU-50 and AU-58 and retain much of their original luster.

Obverse

The obverse of the 1899-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle features a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. She is depicted wearing a coronet crown with 13 stars surrounding her head to represent the original colonies. The year of issue, 1899, is found below the bust.

Reverse

On the reverse of these Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles is the Great Seal of the United States. The Type III design features a bald eagle with the national shield, clutching arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. Above the eagle are 13 stars, with the denomination “TWENTY DOLLARS” engraved at the bottom.

History

As the 19th century drew to a close, the United States Mint ramped up production of Liberty Double Eagles, with both the Philadelphia and San Francisco Mints striking over 2 million coins per year. The San Francisco Mint alone produced more than 2 million coins in 1899, making this a significant year for the series.
