Obverse
On the obverse of 1896 Morgan Silver Dollars, Lady Liberty is featured wearing a Phrygian cap and a crown of wheat. Presented in left-profile relief, this iconic image was designed by former U.S. Mint Chief Engraver George T. Morgan.
Reverse
The reverse of the Morgan Silver Dollar Coin contains a heraldic eagle motif. In this rendering, the eagle has its wings spread wide as it looks to the left. If you examine its talons, youll see arrows and an olive branch, which symbolize war and the peace America strives for.
History
The U.S. Mint began producing Morgan Silver Dollars following the Coinage Act of 1873. The coins were first struck from 1878-1904 before production ceased when reserves from the Sherman Silver Purchase Act ran out. Following the Pittman Act of 1918, the Morgan returned once again in 1921 before being replaced by the Peace Silver Dollar.
