Obverse

Reverse

The heraldic eagle of the United States is found in the reverse design of 1884-CC Morgan Dollars. This design was also developed by George Morgan and features a front-facing bald eagle clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. The inscriptions on this field read United States of America, In God We Trust, One Dollar, and CC. The mint mark is located beneath the feathers of the eagle and above the letter D in the word dollar.

History

The Government Services Administration, or GSA, was brought in to audit the collection of Morgan Dollars found in Treasury vaults in the 1960s. It determined that 95% of the stash came from the Carson City Mint. Many of the Carson City Mint coins were never released to circulation, instead going right to Treasury vaults. The GSA found a total of 962,000 1884-dated Morgans in the stash of coins, a figure that accounts for an astonishing 85% of the total mintage from 1884.
