Surrounding the torch are thirteen stars in an outer circle, five stars in an inner semi-circle, and the word “Indiana” set against a gold field. This design, created by Paul Hadley, was chosen to celebrate Indianas 100th year of statehood in 1916.

History

The nineteenth star, larger than the others and placed at the top of the torch’s flame, represents Indiana itself as the nineteenth state to join the Union.
