Obverse
For the obverse of 1/4 oz GSM Walking Liberty Silver Rounds, the Golden State Mint uses Weinmans depiction of Walking Liberty. This stunning image of Liberty was indicative of the American mindset in the early 20th century. Emerging on the international stage, America was a symbol of hope and prosperity for the future. As such, Weinmans vision of Liberty shows her figure in left-profile relief marching toward the sun on the horizon. This is symbolic of the nations drive toward an ever-brighter future. Liberty is draped in the American flag and carries oak and laurel branches in her left hand.
Reverse
The reverse of 1/4 oz GSM Walking Liberty Silver Rounds includes the image of an American bald eagle. This design also featured on Weinmans imagery for the Walking Liberty Half Dollar and depicts the national symbol perched on the edge of a mountainside cliff as it clings to a small sapling growing from a crack in the rocks.
History
Weinman created the image of Walking Liberty in 1916 as part of a US Mint and Treasury Department contest to find new images for several denominations of US currency. Walking Liberty replaced US Mint Chief Engraver Charles E. Barbers depiction of Liberty on the half dollar in 1916 and remained in production through 1947. Since 1982, Walking Liberty has featured on the obverse of the American Silver Eagle bullion coins.
