Obverse
The obverse face of the Proof American Gold Eagle features the familiar face of Lady Liberty. She is commonly featured on this side of the coin and is a creation of Augustus Saint-Gaudens who designed her in 1907. He depicts her as a graceful woman who walks towards the viewer holding an olive branch and a torch. This design first made its debut on the $20 Gold Double Eagle.
Reverse
Miley Busieks design is featured on the reverse face of the 1/2 oz Proof Gold Eagle. It depicts a family of eagles with the male head flying over them in the wind. The female watches over their hatchlings while looking up to catch a glimpse of her male counterpart. Alternatively, Jennie Norris’ depiction of a bald eagle head in right-profile relief is on the reverse of coins issued from the 2021 Type 2 debut onward.
History
Proof American Gold Eagle Coins were released in 1986 with just a 1 oz option being available. The following year, a 1/2 oz version was released with 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz weights being made available in 1988. These coins have been released annually, except for 2009 due to economic uncertainty.
