Adolph A. Weinman submitted two designs of Liberty to the US Mint in 1916. His Walking Liberty design was chosen for the US half Dollar and his Winged Liberty design was chosen for the US Dime. The latter has popularly been referred to as the Mercury Dime due to his Winged Liberty’s resemblance to the Roman god Mercury.
